A street named after a heroine

Triệu Thị Trinh was born in 226 in Thanh Hóa. In 248, with her brother Triệu Quốc Đạt, she led an uprising against the Wu kingdom of China. Legend has her riding into battle on an elephant and saying she would rather "ride the storm, tread the fierce waves and kill the sharks of the Eastern Sea" than live as a servant. She died the same year, at twenty-three.

The street is older than its name. Its northern end was once called Hàng Giò, and the stretch around Trần Hưng Đạo was Hàng Kèn, where a small slope still marks the east wall of the old Trịnh lords' palace. Under French rule it was two streets, Gia Long and Lê Lợi. In 1945 the southern part, where our house stands, was the first to be named Bà Triệu, and in 1954 the two became one street.

Bà Triệu today

It is one of central Hanoi's main shopping streets and runs one way, north to south, from the lake to Đại Cồ Việt. Ten minutes' walk from the house is Vincom Center Bà Triệu, Vincom's first mall (opened in 2004), with a supermarket, a cinema and international brands. Two small pagodas sit along the street, Chân Tiên at No. 151 and Vân at No. 312, and most people walk past without noticing them.

The lanes on either side are where the neighbourhood eats: bánh cuốn shops older than the mall, bún chả served at lunch only, phở from early morning and hotpot on the pavement at night. Everything below is within about fifteen minutes on foot.

From the airport

Nội Bài is about 45 minutes by car outside rush hour, longer between 17:00 and 19:00. A metered taxi or a Grab from the arrivals hall is the simplest option and costs roughly the same either way; agree the fare or use the app price before you set off.
